Building guest loyalty at your restaurant: where to actually start

Many loyalty programs fail not because the idea is wrong, but because they're built on assumptions instead of real data about who your regular guests actually are.

First understand who comes back, then decide how to reward them

A guest who visits once a month and one who visits every week don't need the same incentive. Having a clear visit history for every guest is the first step toward building a program that actually makes sense.

Coupons work better when they arrive at the right moment

A coupon sent right after a visit has a different impact than one sent at random. Connecting coupons to a guest's real history — not just their last visit, but their habits — meaningfully changes the results.

Measure, don't just launch

A loyalty program with no numbers to look at is just an act of faith. How many coupons are actually redeemed? How many guests come back because of the program, versus how many would have come back anyway? These are the questions that let you improve it over time, instead of leaving it untouched since launch day.

Building loyalty isn't about handing out random discounts — it's about knowing your guests well enough to understand what would actually bring them back.
